These people baffle me. Being a bit of a petrol head, I cry every time I see a perfectly good car destroyed. Theres also the not-so-good cars which I'd normally ignore, but the neon stripes, and "racing" fuel filler grab my attention and make me scream. Its all about creating the impression of performance. Bigger wheels, louder exhaust, it doesn't matter if your turning circle is crippled, because you are shitcool! And those wider tyres really come in handy for taking the tricky 20mph corners as you lap the housing estate.
Equally bad, in their own way, is anyone who unnecessarily buys a 4x4. Thankfully we don't quite have SUV's in Ireland yet, but its certainly going that way. Few people are able to come up with any real justification for having an off-road vehicle. People who own them simply like having a big car. So much so, that they are willing to accept the terrible handling, slower performance, higher cost, higher fuel cost, higher pollution.
To combat some of these problems, manufacturers have started reducing the height, and in some cases removed the 4 wheel drive. So what we end up with is an abomination, that doesn't go off road any better than a car ( remember it will normally come with road tyres ). It doesn't do anything better than a car, except look big. Everyone should have to justify their purchase of one of these things, and if they can't they have to pay a massive fine, or get rid of it.
